History
The White Mountains, also known as “Madares,” are the largest mountain range in Crete, dominating the Chania region. They are renowned for their wild beauty, with snow often capping their peaks in winter, and for their numerous gorges, such as the famous Samaria Gorge.
Omalos, a picturesque plateau at the foothills of the White Mountains, is a landmark for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Situated at an altitude of about 1,200 meters, it offers breathtaking views and serves as the gateway to the Samaria Gorge. The area combines natural beauty with traditional charm, featuring the warm hospitality of the locals and authentic local products.
The route
Pick up from the hotel or at a predetermined rendezvous point. We drive up to Omalos via the scenic road passing through picturesque villages.
We visit the entrance of the world famous Samaria gorge! A unique and beautiful sight to see. With Gingilos peak rising up to the sky opposite us you really start to get the feeling of being in the mountains and the scale of the Lefka Ori.
Now it’s time to go even higher and visit a nature /wildlife observatory. Easily accessible via asphalt road, we drive through a beautiful forest up to 1400m elevation and we enjoy the outstanding views of a large part of West Crete below us and beyond us.
The Botanical Garden offers a unique opportunity for visitors to get acquainted with fruit trees, herbs, spices, medicinal and ornamental plants from all over the world, to wander in the marvelous world of Nature and to see up close the animals that inhabit it. The Garden is a journey… almost magical! After your walk through the gardens you can enjoy your meal and relax on the spacious balconies of the restaurant, taking in the majestic view and food prepared with ingredients coming from the vegetable garden as well as herbs and fruit coming from the park.
What to expect
A visit to Omalos offers a mix of breathtaking natural beauty, physical adventure, and cultural immersion. Keep an eye out for the kri-kri, the wild goats of Crete, as well as other native species of flora and fauna. The gorge is part of the Samaria National Park and is a protected biosphere reserve, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.

What you will need
Comfortable shoes are suggested. If you need trekking poles for the short walk at the second stop or at the Botanical Gardens we will supply them. Also, Crete gets very hot during the summer season, even early in the morning, so water, a hat, sunglasses and sun lotion are a must. If you have any questions or specific needs feel free to discuss them with us before the excursion.
Hiking is not mandatory
Our trips combine sightseeing with small hiking trails and walking routes. It’s up to your preference if you want to hike or do the trails by car.
Comfortable pair of shoes
We recommend for your best experience to wear a steady pair of shoes, like sports shoes or hiking boots.
Hat-Accessories
A hat or some sun protection accessories are recommended for your best experience.
